At Thomas Tallis school, the English curriculum is designed to empower students in becoming effective communicators and confident critics. The ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, and the ability to critically engage with literature and language is the foundation of our subject. This has been the case since the first formal statement of its educational purpose in the 1921 Newbolt report more than 100 years ago. Our conception of powerful English is designed to cultivate students’ ability to understand, interrogate and appreciate language and literature so that they can understand the world and change it for the better.
