We feel that English is the best subject ever. If you love to read A LOT then you will love our courses, which are taught by an enthusiastic and dedicated team which consistently delivers excellent results. Here at the Tallis English Faculty we offer four study pathways at KS5 -
English Literature is an exciting opportunity to experience some of the greatest works of literature ever written. You will study a combination of plays, poetry and prose plucked from such literary greats as Webster and Shakespeare, Brontë and Rossetti as well as more contemporary writers such as Jez Butterworth and Angela Carter. We run regular trips to the theatre and lectures, in order to experience drama as was intended, and hear academics talk about their subjects, as well as the legendary annual residential to Yorkshire as preparation for the Gothic literature exam. Students love seeking the ghosts of Cathy and Heathcliff upon the Wuthering Heights as well as following the trail of Count Dracula up the 199 Whitby steps of which the Irish author Bram Stoker so famously wrote ... plus, English Literature is on the Russell Group's list of Facilitating Subjects which means it is highly regarded by all Universities and will enable you to develop analytical, critical and evaluative skills which will equip you for further study and beyond.
English Language takes a different approach to the study of texts. You will study how language is used in the real world, for a whole range of differing audiences and purposes. You have to be interested in the world around you, you must have news apps on your devices and be interested in how Language is constructed for meaning. Other questions we consider is how do those in power use language in order to control others? How is technology affecting the ways in which we communicate? How does gender influence the way we speak to each other? Why has language use changed so much over the past three hundred years? How do children learn to speak, read and write English? Also, you will learn a lot of really fascinating stuff, including the theories of Noam Chomsky and David Crystal.
Creative Writing is a distinct discipline in higher education. It encourages the development of skills that are essential for further study and a range of professional careers. This EPQ enables aspiring writers to start on the path to professional practice and is equally useful for anyone interested in improving their creative and critical thinking and communication skills.
We also offer a GCSE re-take course for those of you who just missed your level 4.
Philosophy is the oldest intellectual discipline our civilisation possesses, the mother of all sciences. To do philosophy is to do conceptual engineering, since philosophy studies the deep structures and methodologies of human thought. During the course you will encounter the extraordinary minds of many of the most intelligent people who have ever lived, and be introduced to many entirely open issues which have been continuously part of the human conversation for the last 2600 years. This subject probably involves more completely open-ended discussion than any other. There is a good deal of reading of seriously hard, abstruse and odd material, and a good deal of writing about the same. You’ll need to be intelligent, open-minded, hard-working and imaginative, and to have intellectual tenacity as well. You’ll also need to be at ease with very abstract ideas and very open questions. There are no easy answers in philosophy, and plenty of titanic intellects whose ideas have shaped the whole of human civilisation. Humility and hard work are a must!
