ks3
KS4At Key Stage 3 students are given the opportunity to build on a range of skills in English, notably writing for audience and purpose, reading for meaning and inference, and speaking and listening. Every student will have the chance to read and study a variety of texts: short stories, whole novels, poems from various eras and cultures, play scripts, as well as non-fiction texts.
The Year 7 programme of study starts with an exploration of the English language from early to medieval times and then progresses to look at the Renaissance period through the study of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Following this is an investigation of culture and identity through a selection of 21st century short stories.
In Year 8 students will have an introduction to 21st Century Literature by studying Animal Farm by George Orwell. Students will then move on to poetry and will look at the period encompassing the Romantics through to the Modern Day. Their final topic will be the Renaissance (Shakespeare), which they will explore through either Richard III or Macbeth.
Texts are purposefully chosen to allow students to explore language, themes and wider issues in an engaging and meaningful way. ICT is embedded into the curriculum, giving students the chance to explore ideas using a range of different mediums. Students are given extended projects throughout the two years in order to develop their engagement with the topic. By the end of Year 8, we hope students will: have a love of reading and the ability to empathise with different issues; have developed a distinctive personal writing style; be able to communicate ideas clearly and effectively; and feel prepared for the demands of Key Stage 4, which begins in Year 9.
